i watched love exposure and why dont you play in hell recently, and they connected with me a lot. those are fucking movies dude. sion sono is quickly becoming one of my favorite writer directors, i really love his unashamed off beat style of directing

i'm just getting into jp cinema so i don't have too many deep cuts yet. but if you haven't checked out Anno's 90s-2000s live action movies i'd give them a watch. shiki jitsu (ritual) is one of my favorite movies.

One cut of the dead is may favorite. I love almost everything about it. It's a shame tho that the director hasn't really made anything else as good

Blue (2002), its a movie about high school lesbians and Cézanne paintings

Right now my fav has to be Tetsuo: The Iron Man
Not just like cuz its weird and edgy, but a lot of the concepts from production and story are seemingly used ALOT now. Also the visuals are just wack as hell

I love Hanabi

Ichi the Killer (2001), its a adaptation of the 1998 manga I feel like it portrays the themes of the manga pretty well, the pacing and cinematography is also really fucking cool, also one of the characters is played by the director of Tetsuo: The Iron Man. Bat shit insane and overly sadistic and masochist with plenty of exaggerated Japanese gore

Noroi, one of my favorite horror films period

964 pinnochio, its fucking bizarre and I love the fashion of the two main characters, the pacing gets a little too fast by the end which fucks with the atmosphere but everything else is perfect, the uncomfortable drawn out scenes of pinnochio running through the streets after being lobotomized, the scene of the girl taking advantage of him and keeping him on a leash after his painful 5 minute metamorphosis, the girl running through the underground puking her guts out, all of this being filmed in public with random bystanders having to deal with whatever the fuck is happening infront of them, its like an art college version of a filthy frank video.

shin godzilla, its amazing even the beurocracy bits are nice they give the vibe that everyones freaking the fuck out trying to figure out a plan as if the monster wasnt outside destroying absolutely everything in its wake while at the same time evolving, I also like how godzilla facing through each evolution was reminicent of the ways peoples bodies where destroyed in the atomic bombings, its gills spewing irradeated blood, its flesh falling off its bones, its final form being akin to the charred remains of the people who were instantly fossilized upon detonation.

what do you mean "even the bureaucracy bits"? - that's like the primary appeal and point of the film.
but I agree, amazing film.
