What are you playing?

1 Name: Anonymous 2024-04-13 18:59
As the title suggests, what have you been playing recently?
2 Name: Rita Mordio, Genius Researcher 2024-04-13 20:41
on pc i've mainly been playing the classic source engine coop zombie games (l4d2, contagion, nmrih) and i've been trying to beat the no death no bonfire challenge for dark souls 2. made it to drangleic castle in my best run but i had to take a break after a painful self-induced failure. i'm also waiting with bathed breath for the upcoming public test branch update of exanima. the devs rewrote their engine to support 64bit, made some changes to smooth out collision detection and they're implementing cloth physics so i'm pretty hyped to get a feel for the changes.
i've also been playing tales of vesperia for the xbox360 and it's been a lot of fun. the combat is not good (so i play rita and spam fireballs to avoid engaging with it) but the character dynamics are fun enough to keep me interested.

stardew valley, I like that the animals give you hearts when you click on them. I only wish the tulips would stay forever in the soil, but I think they will die when spring is over.

I've been playing the older pokemon games, made it through fire red a while ago and just beat the elite four in soul silver today, hopefully going through kanto again won't be too much of a slog/grind.

>>6
could you tell me how do I get into stardew valley, I always start playing and then I go around the village, run out of energy and stop playing cuz I go to sleep and have no idea what to do on the second day.
8 Name: Superunknown 2024-04-13 21:05
Been playing Dragon's Dogma 2 (it's somewhat disappointing) and Clone Hero on my keyboard (cuz I lost my thing to use my guitar)
other than that, I've only really been playing Monster Hunter games for the past like year or two. :/

it is definitely something that gets boring if you play it too much consecutively. It's about finding joy in doing the mundane, like feeding and caring for your chickens so they lay bigger eggs and you can sell them for bigger bucks to build a bigger coop to house an even bigger quantity of chickens. If there is a limit of chickens in this game I will probably tap out once I reach it.
10 Name: Anonymous 2024-04-13 21:26
>>9
but I don't know how to get chickens to begin with. I always just get the fishing rod, try to fish 2 times, and then immediately run out of energy so my character can't do anything.

so based, imo ff7 really is as good as its reputation would have u believe. i hope that more people take inspiration from that era of final fantasy and make more rpgs with ATB systems, i really have a taste for it now and it feels like nobody is doing them

Right now I'm playing Quake

Clannad and Dragon Quest V. From a game design perspective, I am a little disappointed in DQV for a number of reasons, the foremost being that it seems like the first in the series to scale back the simple but effective puzzle-adventure quest design so well exemplified by the earlier games. Instead, it seems to opt for a more straightforward and flag-reliant approach to narrative design. Also boomerangs are op in the early game. But it's DQ so of course it is still fun, and I have recruited a pretty good team of monster allies so far.
36 Name: Anonymous 2024-04-15 09:33
Just finished the first game I got from my local library (Lies of P) and now I've moved on to Baldur's Gate 3. My library gets AAA PS5 games on launch in box. I can hardly believe that video games are *readily* free and noone talks about it.

Also BG3 is easily a GOAT. No question, Larian studios knocked it out all over again. I love having an RPG thats fully voiced, it makes everything feel so much more important. It blurs the line of whats main quest, main quest-adjacent, and whats side content.
37 Name: Anonymous 2024-04-15 13:03
Yakuza 0 and Dead Island: Riptide co-op with a friend. I'm also reading Subahibi on and off. Jabberwocky is kind of boring compared to It's my Own Invention and Looking-glass Insects which had me on the edge to my seat (and bed). I guess technically I'm also playing Gravity Rush on the Vita, but most of the time I just roam around and enjoy the background music.

>>31
Oh man, Endless Mondays Dreams and Deadlines is really good. hcnone is the GOAT.

Nothing recently. In the last year I played lots of Overwatch 2. I have played on and off since around 2017. I got sick of it after hitting top 500. I was super proud of my achievement but since then have felt it is sort of pointless. I've achieved my goal. Playing in high ranks is not really much fun. Can't really just relax or listen to music, every tiny mistake is instantly punished.
41 Name: Air 2024-04-16 12:07
i've been lax on the games as of late. been wanting to play dujanah again tho.
42 Name: hbana 2024-04-16 20:20
mainly just killing floor 1, I don't like how overengineered the sequel's levels are or how much worse the game feels/sounds in terms of music. the original is just way too good

i've been enjoying style savvy lately, and hanging out a lot in vrchat if that counts :3
44 Name: Anonymous 2024-04-17 00:18
>>43
omg style savvy is so fun, i forgot i have it on my 3ds, thanks for reminding me. The only thing I wish were different about it is that I could give clients whatever combination of clothes items I want from whatever brands, instead of having to stick to a certain brand for a certain look. I get that that’s part of the challenge, and there has to be some objective scoring system, but I don’t want a challenge like that I want to set my own parameters for what qualifies as a certain look!
45 Name: Anonymous 2024-04-17 00:58
>>44
i dont understand what style savvy is about, but im assuming it a dressup game like blue baby. dress up games always confuses me, why whould you want to dress a pre determaned dong when you could just draw whatever you wanted with a pen and paper?

for fun of course, but in all seriousness games a just a waste of time that hinderes your progress outside of the wired... the best you could do is by playing shitty games that feels impressionable... (ill let u decide if that helps u with your life)

progress outside of the wired
like any of that matters. the only offline things that matter are harm reduction and personal well-being. there is no progress to be made in this world except for progress towards the next one (if there is one, i'd prefer it if there were not).

it's good to play when you are on a long plane ride and doing productive things in that instance will only give you a headache. The outfits in the game can also give you ideas to apply to fashion irl, even for drawing.
>>47
Also, yea it's for goofing around, you don't have to be progressing your life 100 percent of the time. Plus, you can play them with friends and have a relaxing time. Though, I do think games should only be played occasionally.

Finally finished Mass Effect 3 the other day. I can see why the ending pissed people off back in the day, it feels kinda thrown together. But overall a pretty comfy series of games, perfect for living out your Star Trek dreams(though the writing never gets as good as the best Trek eps), with some pretty easy run n gun gameplay you don't have to get all invested in.

Now I can commit to God Of War 2018 which I just got. Also got Phoenix Wright 3 on my backlog.

i picked up receiver 2 during the steam fps sale and it's the best game ever made. no other game makes me feel so terrified. when a blue light turns yellow, i feel true fear. if you like guns and being punished for your carelessness you should definitely check it out, plus it's made by wolfire and those guys are really cool.

Lightning Warrior Raidy, an old H-DRPG. It's really basic and kind of boring. Figuring out the mazes has been pretty fun but the combat and progression and everything else is too simplistic to really be enjoyable and it's also pitifully easy.

Anyone here played the Rance games? I've been going through them in order. Original versions, not remakes. They've ranged widely in quality so far. R1 was awful, probably one of the worst fantasy adventure games I've ever played. Tedious Japanese-style ADV design with some terrible RPG mechanics stapled on. I dropped it and moved on to R2, which, while still hugely flawed, was a massive improvement. I saw it through to the end. Now I'm playing R3 and it's even more improved and evolved than 2. So far I would say the Rance series shows continual growth at an impressive pace.

i'm playing motorstorm arctic edge for the playstation portable. it's a good racing game, the physics aren't as good as in the ps3 motorstorm games but the cold setting is nice, the track variety is very good and the vehicle customization is fun. in terms of aesthetics the motorstorm games rule above all other racing games, everything about them seems to have been carefully crafted to give off an air of "cool". the character designs for the drivers are especially cool. after i beat the festival for arctic edge i'll get my ps3 back in working order and i'll play pacific rift's festival again because i really need to get back inside of the cool cars, so cool... lunar-tec rollcage... italia gagliano... monarch claymore... i miss you...

if you really are interested in the reason : www redhat com en about brand standards history

i think the org was specifically making fun of the "people" who used the "free community redhat version". this is when I stopped using redhat stuff at all, I had previously purchased actual cd distribution versions of redhat, and was insulted by how they managed the "community free version" and never downloaded fedora. yes that means I hated the redhat org \before\ systemd. they were already planning their systematic destruction of linux back in like 2005 at the latest (who knows how much further back the seeds of evil go tho.)
but maybe it was just because their logo by that time was film-noiry fedora wearing detective vibe?

I wish there was a game where there is a procedurally generated world of sparse islands or a vast no man's land with sparse outposts in an apocalyptic world. The player would travel between them using a ship or a plane or a landship and try to survive and thrive. I already cobbled some minecraft mods together that pretty much reflected my idea, but i need a better pc to run it with more than like 20 fps, even with optimization mods. It guess it would be like the czechoslovak legion's revolt or girls' last tour, even though they're two very different things. Actually, someone REALLY should make a game based on girls' last tour, something like what I mentioned above. Well, I probably wouldn't be able to run it with my current hardware anyway.

Jjthunder to the max, distant horizons, immersive aircraft, villages revamped.
This is a very basic version of my idea. I only played for a day, most of which was spent generating DH chunks to make the world look bigger. There's definitely a lot more I want to do with the game but I'll do that when I have a better pc.

Alan Wake 1. Has a surprisingly good pc version for what was originally a 360 exclusive, complete with some mechanical changes to account for mouse and keyboard control. It's also a pretty high quality game overall, though maybe that's to be expected from Remedy. Still, the level design and encounter design is very basic. It's better than average by yoge standards but doesn't even touch Japanese TPS action stuff of this era, not by a mile. Still having a lot of fun with it though. Once I'm done with my first playthrough I'll check out Nightmare mode. Heard it requires a more fight-or-flight playstyle which might make things more interesting.

Eden's Ritter. A dark fantasy nukige from Waffle featuring a bunch of "dark" fetishes. As much as I despise vndb I should have checked the tags there prior to playing this as some of the scenes included were really not to my liking. Others were however, so it evens out in the end. In any case, this is clearly a well made game but as is unfortunately often the case with nukige like this, the game design is paradoxically for toddlers. Despite the adult setting, scenarios, and themes, what we have here on a level of design is a game that might be interesting to kids about 5-7 years old. For anyone beyond that age group, it is insultingly shallow. I've decided to stop playing for now even though I was near the end (around 90% gallery) because I just found myself not caring about anything Eden's Ritter has to offer on any level.

guild wars 2's new expansion is close to ruining my gw2 obsession. the new maps are super pretty and fun to just exist in, but currently they have the best gold farm in the game.
"that's great then right? you have a good convinient reason to exist in those maps, it's a win-win!"
no. see it's like 40x better gold farm than literally any other thing you can do in the game. it's so good that it makes everything else seem like a waste. more, the gold farm involves, going to a magic mirror, shooting a moving target, which reveals several locked chests scattered around the map then looting those chests with key charges.
there is some detail about keeping number of unlock keys you have below 25, so you can't just do all the mirrors first then do all the keys. you get 10 charges on each mirror completion, and the 3 different chest sizes take 2, 4, and 10 keys respectively.
there aren't enough keys for all the chests if you just do the mirrors once, so in order to effectively do it you have to keep track of which mirrors you need to redo or every time a mirror reveals more charges debt in chests than you can cover with just that mirror open what you can then go back to that mirror, reload the map, then finish opening. that last way is pretty ineffecient in terms of charges tho because some mirrors reveal less charge debt in chests than they reveal, so you could be wasting key charges that way.

anyway, because this task is just barely not mindless, and involves a lot of bouncing back and forth around the same areas of the maps over and over, and is repeatable every day, and pays a huge amount of gold (in the form of rare and masterwork items) i do it once every day after reset, and then feel this apathy toward doing literally anything else. I am not used to feeling apathy in gw2. I've never cared about getting lots of gold, i've never grinded any of the other "strong gold farms" on repeat or even daily. I've always just had goals i worked toward.

I'm trying to get into homesteading the new deserted island, but that's annoying too because i don't want to make daily gathering lines in the homestead longer with my build, so i need to avoid a large triangle of the island, or build inside that triangle.

it's just so tireing.

then hearing the news about the metroid prime 4 reveal. It all again has me thinking that people in power of the games industry are trying their best to make people stop playing games. make people burn out. ruin their trust in the big franchises.
make people think "if this is all so bad, maybe I should just play the mmo 'irl', at least then i'd be able to buy nice things irl"
