can't say much on the technical dev side but it's way more simplicity than nostalgia. rpg maker itself is beginner friendly and that version is dirt cheap. (esp on sale.) it makes sense ppl would want to dev on it given the conditions of it being cheap, accessible, and capable. look at the games that have come out on that version- there's a lot that can be done w it. i'd also say its battle system draws some ppl in.
