Shareholders + it's addictive. most of the time it is in a legal gray area as-well so they can just do whatever they want. plus like most games i see people playing are live service now and have heavy FOMO shit

One reason is that due to inflation and the reduction in production costs the real price of vidya has been decreasing for decades, while the nominal price has stayed the same, and so companies have had to pick up the slack by including other money making ventures e..g microtransactions. you can read about it here arstechnica(dot)com(slash)gaming(slash)2020(slash)07(slash)the-return-of-the-70-video-game-has-been-a-long-time-coming

it depends on how it's implemented, but if it's just cosmetics like csgo skins or whatever, I really don't care. I know everyone gets upset like it's unregulated gambling and it's addictive or whatever. The way I see it, I get to play a game for free which is going to be actively supported and funded because some retards are too stupid to understand probabilities, then all the better for me. In fact more things should be like this. We can run the whole economy on the gambling whales stupid tax and then I can get everything for free. Now if the gambling actually impacts the gameplay like gachaslop that's a different story.

I'd say it's because of phones
