did you know ipods are called DAPs now. it was weird when mp3 players started being called ipods, just because ipods were the most popular kind of mp3 player, but find it even stranger that they are now called DAPs. DAP of course is an acronym for Digital Audio Player, which does, in fact, make more sense than calling it an ipod, or even an mp3 player (there are more audio formats than mp3 after all). and the name is similar to other music centered acronyms such as DAC (digital-to-analog converter) and DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) so it "fits" in that way too ( altho I might argue the similarity between these is actually a reason /not/ to use DAP )
the problem is of course adding one more "word" to the list of words you need to know to find what you intend to find. I mean how is someone supposed to know that ipod no longer is the generic term for any dedicated audio playing device? how long has it even been the case? Yes, mp3 players and ipods did go out of style with the ascendance of the smart phone, brings up another interesting thing, we never refered to all iphone shaped/styled phones as iphones, they quickly became "smart phones" ... ...
