genuine question, Im think tenants are even bigger assholes if they get their way.

it's a problem of stewardship imo. many renters have no sense of ownership (arguably, rightly so) over their living space. because of this they don't really give a shit.
same reason many people litter, it's always someone elses problem. the thing is there isn't a solution to this under capitalism. treating my landlord's property with respect only benifits the landlord. the only penalty is i don't get my deposit back? the tenant already doesn't have the money, and the landlord does, so the inertia of the money drives the landlord class to contrive bs fees to lower the hit of losing it and makes the tenant feel as if they already aren't going to get it back in the first place.

Assuming we're talking about a sort of lefty thing here, it's missing the point to just go around saying landlords are individually assholes. There are many landlords who are nice people, and there are many landlords who keep rent as low as they can and don't hoard property etc. The problem is that under a system of private property renteerism means that many people are denied housing, or forced to spend larger chunks of their paycheck on housing, when landlords aren't really doing anything productive for society, they just own property and sit on it collecting rent without producing anything. It's sort of like pointing out a bug or exploit. the way an economy should work (at least according to some people), is that there are incentives to maximise the productive forces of society. from each according to their ability to each according to their need and so on. Well landlords aren't really producing anything according to their ability, they're just collecting rent on something someone else built, and occaisionally maybe they pay someone else to do some repairs or upkeep. Now from my personal take on this, it's the giant corporate landlords who own tens or hundreds of properties who are the biggest problem. Now if you're a tennent you have to deal with a whole layer of corpo beurocracy like you can see in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uq59qGkwXlE
