There is a reason /soc/ is considered to be the worst board on 4chan and there is a reason why /r9k/ and /lgbt/ are the very close to being the second worst boards. It's the people, who break their anonymity for dubious reasons. Socializing and treating the Internet like a meta-meatspace is what make it so much worse than it could be.

XMPP has been around for decades, has good crypto, is actually decentralized, and most importantly isn't a fad that will die off as quick as it come as soon as it's gimmick gets boring or broken. I'd say Matrix is fine, as long as you use a home server and not matrix.org.

I had xmpp id, server I used has been shut down. I can't authorize & login with my id to another xmpp server instance. Lost contacts, friendlist.

alternative to run own server is not easy. hosting. domain. ssl. time consuming.
