I've been wanting to use IRC more and not sure of many channels that aren't really focused around like a specific piece of software.

Honestly, I want to know too. I used to go on IRC all the time like 15 years ago, but almost all the channels I went to died, and the rest moved to Discord.

I think these channels are worth mentioning.

#tohno-chan, #/g/punk, and #hikari3 on Rizon.
Most of the tilde/pubnix irc channels are quite comfy too.

i've never looked too deep into xmpp myself but from what i've seen they seem to be for different usecases so apples and oranges no?

xmpp does have multi user chats but honestly, I've not seen any real public xmpp chats set up

im a fan of kvirc. it uses qt so if you're on gnome it might be better to use something else
