Does anyone else just watch garbage on YouTube all day? What have you been watching?
2 Name: Anonymous 2025-09-10 21:09
i've been a bit sick lately though this only pushed me to slop for a few hours of one of the days that i have been afflicted, I was just sitting there and watching ZestyJesus clip compilations which is bizarre as heretofore I'd never watched anything this creature put out.

I hate youtube so much. Its worse than TV now. I avoid it as much as I can but its inevitable. Where else can I listen to music and watch old documentaries? And now they are even killing that.

The worst thing about watching denpatube video is the slight sentiment of superiority for watching it. In reality it's just as bad for the viewer as watching MrBeast or some slop documentaries, I understand that it's a more human and more interesting kind of entertainment, but in the end it's still Youtube videos. I excuse this behavior by saying I'm only listening to it in the background, albeit I more often than not just stop doing what I'm doing and start starring at my Youtube tab again. Similary how denpa videos give you a slight feeling of superiority, the same applies for means by which you avoid the botnet, i.e. yt-local+Tor+yt-dlp+mpv. The botnet is the smallest problem compared to the gigantic time sink it is and the disgusting brainwashing it gives you by passively consuming content, opinion, propaganda, and psyops. I want to stop with Youtube once and for all, but I get into old patterns all the time. I fucking hate social media and the people who use it, and I'm not any better by watching Youtube all day.

I watched all The Yearbook Committee videos after n0 mentioned them on the patreon podcast. They were interesting and fun. Everytime he interviews someone they seem tremendously UNinteresting and UNfun but also like they might be making the exact same videos with the exact same quality but with the yearbook brah as the un-guy.
A few months ago, I watched all The "Tor's cabinet of curiosities" videos. His videos are pleasent because he's nice and open minded and pretty free. He definitely has the "im an Autistic person presenting my special interests" brainworm though.

I watch northernlion he's funny
8 Name: Anonymous 2025-09-11 22:02
I sometimes watch northernlion, he's unfunny.

Might be the "sloppiest" youtuber I watch, because I usually am able to contort out a reason to justify my virtuous superiority even when I watch something that would be by most considered "sloppy" (for example, the minecraft youtuber "thrite")
But when it comes to northernlion, I want say that I love to hatewatch him, and that is sometimes true, but the true reason is because it is the only "easy-listening" youtuber that I am capable of watching without wanting to gouge my throat out.

I'm actually relatively proud of my ability of being somewhat regimented in my internet consumption (besides brain-dead scrolling through reddit for no reason, I don't even have an account, nor do I participate in reddit culture, I don't know why, it just puts me at ease to see all the slop filter through the screen for a while before refocusing on something I'm working on -- that and just strolling around the house like a dementia patient, I guess they scratch the same itch).
I just tend to watch/rewatch that one 800 views a video lets player I started following 8 years ago -- and a rotating belt of thrite/neurotic goose/doshdoshington (and northernlion when I need to slop out a bit); weirdly enough out of the thrite/neurotic goose/dosh trio I might respect thrite as the least sloppy of all-

Sometimes I poke my head out into one of those slop-science/engineering videos, but I don't usually last more than 10 minutes, they bore me out of existence. The only engineering adjacent channel I can stand watching is «tsoding daily», at least they are technically interesting, and the guy behind it is an actually accomplished in his area of expertise rather than a influencer (à lá Linus Tech Tips) or a (science degree drop-out) journalism degree haver pop-science-communication-person (à lá Veritasium).

It baffles me everyday that those kind of channels get an audience of any kind, then again, the most popular """content creator""" (barf) of youtube is Señor Besta, so its just par for the course innit.

Being more objective about it, it is simply that they streamlined what (almost) all of those "review" channels ever were (glorified recaps); and since the manhua scene is in itself an endless content mill, connecting yet another mill to the circuit is child's play.
Sad.

I’m not certain if this qualifies as “slop,” but I checked out the Netflix doc "Unabomber in His Own Words" — it’s still on YouTube. Some of Ted’s statements were oddly compelling. By the way, his MKULTRA code name was “Lawful,” and the FBI arrested him after his brother‑in‑law’s wife gave them a heads‑up.

I'm afraid I don't understand your post. Are you asking for a definition of brainworm or disagreeing with my use of the term or with its application to Tor or something else? Please elaborate. Thanks!

Why do you think Tor has brainworms?

Mainly because he has explicitly described his worry that people don't "take [him] seriously" but instead see him as a "cute little nerd" a bunch of times. But just from watching his videos it's very obvious that he's keenlt self aware and vigilant of how he might be perceived as Autistic from how he always nods to it when speaking about trains or whatever. His habit of describing his channel as a refuge of rare kinship for him and his audience is another example of this.

I get where he's coming from cause there's a lot of initialization of autistic people in general, and he doesn't want that to flavor how people see his channel

i did this but just with some ublock rules recently. it sounds like a meme but removing this last vestige of algorithmic feeds from my life (already off all scrolly social media etc. apps) really does feel like it's made a difference. im probably not doing anything more useful with the time i've gained but just getting away from the gnawing empty dread of the content slot machine feels nice :) and I was surprised at how quickly the the desire for that kinda activity went away after a few days.

Farell McGuire has some great content like his video on Viper the rapper https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fBqiFo9vDg

His bandcamp is even better tho since he made a bunch of amazing dark ambient tracks:

Come to think of it the CDDA content of Vormithrax is a massive time sink one can get into.

He also uses an amazing dark-ambient soundpack, thus me remembering:

When video essays are actually good, people just call the "documentaries". Like F for fake

Most documentaries on YouTube are just clips of actual docs with remixed with someone’s commentary channel quality script. 98% of video essays are lazily written op eds. Actually, they are worse than opinion pieces because at least those are well written. They are basically vlogs that are think pieces instead of some retard filming his life. I’ve seen a few good ones but the overwhelming majority suck.

Youtube uses the same fucking CSS element for their recommendations on the home page as the "videos" tab on channels so it's impossible to remove that without being able to sort videos on a channel in a sane manner. i also configured uBO to block cookie notices so I can't turn recommendations off.

I can't take the slop anymore. Youtube recommendations have managed to get even worse than ever. Get me off of this train.

The 'unhooked' browser extension fixes this whole issue by allowing the user to disable almost any element of the YouTube website.

Stylebot works just fine, it's basically a CSS IDE in your browser, there's a graphical "basic editor" and a code editor, the CSS selector function is really useful, you can click on any CSS element on a webpage and choose what you want to do with it either through writing CSS or some basic functions(hiding, centering text etc) through the basic editor.
Alot of other extensions can be done by yourself through a couple of extensions like uBO if you use advanced features, does most of the work of other "privacy" extensions, ***monkey for userscripts(custom Javacript code) and Stylebot for cosmetic changes. The benefit is that you don't have to trust all these extensions with their permissions and it should also decrease your fingerprint.
The problem with YouTube was that the use the same element for recommendations on the home page as the video tab on channels. The most annoying part, which is the recommendations next to the video you're watching can be hidden without affecting other parts of the website.
You can disable recommendations entirely through turning off history, which happens automatically if you reject all cookies or through registering and answering "no" to all their questions(or doing it later if you accepted those for some reason)
You can bypass ID age verification by scanning other people's faces(actors, models other public people that have their face out there anyway) instead of your own. I scanned David Gandy and it accepted it, literally mogging the mass surveillance lmao. Now I'm mostly signed in to see all the videos.
