For a year now I've paying a lot more attention on how stories are told, be it through words or visuals. As a consequence, I am now susceptible to what could be termed cheap writing tricks. Such as, using exposition rather than actually taking the effort of narratively conveying a story, which rather diminishes the enjoyment. Being given only the crux of the plot without actually experiencing it, is on par with reading a Wikipedia summary page of a movie or a anime. Of course, not all exposition is in poor taste, it can be concealed by emotion or certain genre particularities. If a character has a gun aimed at their head, them breaking down and telling a secret feels gratifying. Alternatively, detective stories and heists are expected to have exposition, which lowers the guard for it.

One time, when I was a young pup, I got stuck on rock music sounding too much like the pentatonic scale, so I started to get annoyed whenever I heard something that sounded similar to another song I liked over it. I'm glad I got out of that phase, because I realised there's only 12 notes in the western scale, only so many chords, so it became more freeing when I decided to make my own music. That's when I realised how hard it is to even create a simple effective melody. As for chord progressions, everyone borrows them all the time, apparently. You also can't copyright a drum beat either, but if you get too samey with your own version, it can veer into plagiraism with other instruments. So yeah, been there OP
