space as a form of discipline

what if the harsher environment of the past acted as a disciplining force for the poeple and over time less and less poeple felt a need to be principled because you went from a punishing space like a classroom to a more gentle and free environment like a playground, making poeple feel less of a need or even opportunity to practice discpline and this is not only material what if the past was just a more punishing and harder place socially, something to think about

in order to have a zone of order or taboo or the sacred, you must also have a zone of dissorder or the profane. Violence is taboo precisely because there is a zone (boxing ring, nfl, police line etc) where it is permited and in fact celebrated. This is a key difference between discipline societies and control societies.

some aspects of society have become more lax over time, but others have gotten harsher. You could say it is easier to get away with stuff now that certain things aren't held in high regard anymore, but with the development of things like the internet and global communication, there is a stronger collective conciousness that urges a lot of people to be critical of their place in the world. I think peoples' principles haven't gotten weaker, but they are different now. The principles of the past were more concrete and noticible because people used to live in more isolated communities, so their beliefs were more unique to their situation.

This very much still exists its just more private unspoken also the connection over the internet thing is a marketing ploy, poeple dont care about stuff on the internet or even use it, its mostly high schoolers and stay at home moms, poeple are as connected as tiktok wants them to be lol. And even the poeple on the internet dont really care about the stuff they see, they just go "wow thats crazy" and move on, cause thats all you can really do online tbh, to conflate your place in the world with online shitposting is a rookie mistake

while i definitely think theres a tendency amongst super online ppl to assume everyone else on earth is as plugged in as they are, and among young ppl to assume that things matter way more than they actually do, i think what youre saying is a bit skewed too far in the opposite direction, especially when only considering people on the internet

i might be wrong, but it seems like youre projecting your own feelings onto the avg Online Person, but those ppl have a very different relationship to online than any of the people that use this site lol

the world is a super fucked up and harsh place, i don't know what you are talking about OP.
society is as cutthroat and unaccepting as it has always been and will be, maybe people LARP and pretend it's not but the nail that sticks out gets hammered down. it may be polite to pretend that the society is kinder or something. countries and companies may pretend for political or financial incentive or advantage but it's all bullshit.

if you are just talking about like online culture or discourse that literally doesn't matter because it's 1. make believe, and 2. is also just moderated by a corporation to try make the most money or power possible.
