must engage with the internet and tech outside of Big Tech.

must have a preference or appreciation for low res/mediocrity media (comfy vlogs and such)

But at the same time, sometimes I question and ask, what is otaku nowadays? There are so many anime subgenres, often conflicting with each other, and anime became mainstream. Denpa? Maybe. some sorta Cyberphunk some times? Could be. I never thought we'll be living through it rn nowadays irl, drones & other cyber stuff became mainstream.

gatekeeping is impossible in practice. for a out of band example - literature. there are tiktok book "reviewers" who literally will skip anything that isn't dialog then say they read the book and talk about how much they like it. if people are going to engage with things from the orbit of the moon, and shit up the discourse around it what is to be done? one might attempt complete obscurity. this has been known to fail. attempting countersignaling does keep one type away but it may bring in their polar opposite. technical barriers only work if nothing leaks. but without any leaks how do you bring in people at all?
