This is the way. I don't have history, recommendations, or subscriptions. Nowadays, I only watch good films, read books, learn German, and make art/animations. My only vice is occasionally checking Denpa and 4chan [lit, tv, co, mlp] because I'm too monastic and thus feel the need to get ideas (sensations?) from somewhere. I get a lot of good recommendations and images for example. I also rarely use my phone which is devoid of any mindless apps. You simply need to introduce intentionality to the way you use the internet.
