If you live in a reasonably sized city I guarantee you that there will be some kind of IRL furry meets nearby. If not there will likely be something online for your state, county, etc.
I met my current boyfriend through the furry fandom. I don't really consider myself to have any kind of real attachment to the furry level, it's just a good way to meet and socialise with other gay and queer men who are likely to have similar interests.
Most furries are in their 20s as well, and there's a massive emphasis on the IRL community and other IRL stuff. There are also lots of SFW furry spaces and in any furry space that I've been in drugs and alcohol abuse have been very highly discouraged.
Some furs can be a bit autistic, but on the whole there are plenty of decent people who you can actually have a conversation with.
