the word “otaku” alone has nothing to do inherently with animation or even japanese anime. What about train otaku or game otaku who don’t watch anime?

Anime has many aspects that make it anime and animation is only one of them, there are plenty of media that are unquestionably otaku oriented like VNs and LNs where animation playes pretty much no part. Trying to center animation as the most important pillar of anime is incredibly limiting.
