Ive played mother 1, FF2, earthbound, pokemon mystery dungeon red, every pokemon games until the 3ds ones, SMT1, Paper Mario, Digimon Dusk, Digimon World DS, 3 yugioh card games on GBA (got some progression rpg elements), Chocobo Dungeon 2, I cant remember any more at the moment.

TRPGS: Super Robot Wars (Gameboy), Super Robot Wars Alpha / Alpha Gaiden, Fire Emblem (GBA), Dragon Force (Sega Saturn), Battle for Wesnorth, Project X Zone.

JRPGS are my 2nd favorite genre of video games, fighting games are a little bit better. 16bit era jrpgs are my least favorite era of JRPGS because they look ugly. My favorite system for rpgs is the famicom because the default empty space in open world rpgs is either green grass, blue water or sky, and deep blacks, the background of mother 1 and final fantasy battle scenes are mostly black, huge swaths of famicom rpgs have black space, making for a very unique visual design. In later era jrpgs, developers always put color in every space. Also they are shorter fuck multi disk ps1 jrpgs they are so fucking long.

A very unique JRPG on the famicom is Monster Maker 7, it is based on a TTRPG Card game hybrid from japan. You get to recruit cute anime girls and boys on your team. The first dungeon boss is really hard (you should atleast do the first 2 missions to see if you like it) the game hasn't been fan translated but it isn't that hard to play.

I really want to get around to playing the first 3 dragon quest games on my famicom. Two really weird games are the first two Ultima games on famicom because its japanese developers taking an established Western RPG and changing the gameplay and aesthetics to match JRPGS of the time such as Dragon Quest 3.

If you ever play a shin megami tensai game. You might want to play the first 3 wizardry games on the famicom (or any home computer or console release) since in the option menu you can change the language from japanese to english in the famicom release.

Anyways i have autism sorry for typing alot of shit i just really like jrpgs. if ur a noob at them play paper mario.

JRPG Recommendations:
Digimon Dusk/ Dawn - better than digimon cyberslueth has more digimon in it.

FF2 - doesn't have traditional JRPG level up system.

Gen 1 Pokemon - Gen 1 truther fuck Gen 2 and 3

Yugioh 7 trials to glory - Best Yugioh game ever made

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Red - Have 500 hours in it A+++.

Mother 1 - better in someways to earthbound

Dont play super robot wars games unless your mentally ill like me

mostly i stick to 80s and 90s jrpgs. i love them, though i don't play as many as i used to because i'm busy with other stuff. my personal favorite rpg will always be phantasy star one and frankly, i really should try out the switch version. also >>2 is right about the black backgrounds in nes rpgs. i love the look of those so much.

I can second Mother 1 being better than Earthbound. The problem with earthbound is the way you progress through the world is too linear. It makes the game less fun and replays feel like a chore. A lot of the fun with Mother 1 comes from the open ended world exploration and solving the mysteries to locate the eight melodies.

Same reason why the first pokemon game (red/green/blue/yellow) is the best one. After the third gym badge the map opens up with you being able to go to different towns in the order of your choosing. finding the different hms, winning gym badges, and getting access to new pokemon to catch all feed into the exploration and the map is kind of like one big puzzle that you can complete in many different ways. The later pokemon games are basically just a boring straight line that you walk through.

Excluding Pokémon, I dislike Japanese roleplaying games. If I want to play a turn-based game, board games exist. If I want tawdry plot lines, animé exists. As for roleplaying, tabletop and live-action roleplaying are superior to video games in every way.

I kind of agree with you, but I still think JRPGs have a unique cozy feeling that you won't find anywhere else. I also love board games, but there is a lack of anime-themed games unfortunately.

I love JRPGS but struggle to actually like get the initial spark to keep playing one after tying out one but one I do I usually will play them until I like get all the achievements or just some sort of goal i set for myself

recently I've been playing "Epic Battle Fantasy 4" after 100%ing the the third one in 2024 I finally got around to playing it and it's crazy how much of an improvement it is over the third one but it's still has the same charm the combat is much more complex though and it's so goood

Epic Battle Fantasy 4
can a game be considered a JRPG when you can't even play it in japanese?

I feel like JRPG is a specific style of RPG rather than being just an RPG but "so sugoi" look at early Western RPGS and then early JPRGS and they are quite different
