This is not denpa otoko, this is densha otoko. You probably didn't know that denpa otoko was a thing. After the TV adaptation of the original densha otoko, many otaku protested it, they even held a sign in akiba which said something like "real otaku don't go for 3d". Denpa otoko was a parody or response to densha otoko in which the main character remains happy as a train otaku without having to fall in love with a 3d girl.

No, that was a response to the adaptation. Who can say what the otaku of the 2000's japan felt about the live-action show, but it was negative. How many of them would say the same thing if they read the original?
