never got into it for the same reason I couldn't get into makeup.
in the end it's basically impossible to take ownership of your identity through consumer products. and the products which exist purely on aesthetics and counter cultural branding are the worst of the lot.
this is a personal view, and doesn't come with judgment against those who do find empowerment through such things. I would love to just like things like that without the nagging in the back of my mind telling me that my enjoyment is being weaponized against me.

While on the topic of Japanese dress styles in the west. I would love it (as a man) if women would dress like lots of slice of life characters do. Things like a dress shirt and a pinafore dress, bobby socks and a ribbon in hair. Rounded off collars, puffy sleeves, pleated skirts, shirts with those ribs going down them, suspender skirts, etc. It is modest, classy, stylish, cute, work appropriate and originates from our very own western traditions. They basically wear a modernised version of what women used to wear in the west. I think it is a great look.

i agree that those sorts of clothes look very nice (especially pinafore dresses (i've been making one of those for someone) and shirts with puffy sleeves) but i believe that the development and widespread normalization of "formal" or "office" wear has been a massive regression in terms of variety and creator expression for clothing when compared to the sort of clothing that was fashionable in western, southern and central europe during the 16th and 17th centuries. we need to bring back floral and/or zoomorphic patterns, brass buckles and big frilly cuffs and collars.
