Whenever I am broke I end up surviving on potatoes alone, which I have gotten used to. It helps that there are many methods of preparing them and when you do get something else they usually go well with it
Thankfully I haven't had to do this for a few months

I generally make a little autistic Vegan platter. Today I was feeling ill so I made myself some smoked tofu and Vegan corn dogs and had some jelly and a yoghurt with a Red Bull for desert.

I always check the nutritional information and calories per 100g before I buy anything.
If you're looking for cheap sources of calories, protein and general nutrients I'd suggest edible seeds, dried fruit, peanuts, peanut butter, tofu, any kinds of beans or legumes, brown or seeded breads, oates and bananas. Bananas are good because they're one of the few fruits that are actually high in calories as well as being high in calcium.
Frozen fruit is also generally significantly cheaper, like significantly cheaper, than fresh fruit, and it lasts a lot longer. You can get frozen fruit in bulk as well.
Honey is also another cheap source of calories and it has some nutritional benefit. That being said if you're being cheap 39p honey it's nowhere near as healthy as manuka honey but it can add some cheap calories and sweetness to your bulk frozen fruit buys.
Also get LOTS of lentils. Personally I've started making lentil stews (often half green and half red) with peanut butter, chia seeds, flax seeds, and mixed veg.
I generally use very small portions of a large variety of different cheap ingredients.
Lentils take 10 minutes to boil so they're pretty easy to make as well, same with frozen veg.

honey being cheap sounds like a fantasy. here in burgerland we don't have cheap honey. we have cheap honey flavored corn syrup. literally refined white sugar is better for you. all the real honey is sold at "artisian" level for 2 kindeys for 200g.
olive oil is the king of healthy calorie additive tho. add that shit to everything. use it for all cooking oil uses. drizzle it on beans and rice, add it to smoothies, put in on ice cream, mix it with peanut butter to stretch it, and drink in shots.

Yeah it's suspiciously cheap, but it does claim to be 100% pure honey. I don't know if it's maybe subsidised or something.
I do usually add some olive oil to my pasta. Gives it a nice texture.

I've decided to stop eating 3 meals and stick to two. I won't eat garbage food anymore. I'm going to spend more to eat good fresh food. Today I had roasted oats with yogurt and berries for breakfast and downed it with water. For supper, I had a slice of roast beef and tomato on toast made with pumpernickel bread, some goat cheese, and a glass of hot ginger tea with honey then snacked on some apple slices.

Nobody mentioned soup. That is one of the meals you can ask for. You get hydrated and the nutrients are absorbed easily (already in liquid form!). Little chewing involved as well. I used to dip bread. I try to do it less. White bread is most delicious for sandwiches, black bread takes the cake when it comes to hot beverages like soup.

Soup is also one of the easiest meals to make. You boil water and add whatever. Ham? Works well. Eggs? Sure, throw them in. Left-over pizza? Better separate salami, besides that, GREAT!

out of premade flour tortillas....
don't substitute half the flour + leavener for pancake mix thinking it's a cheeky move. something in the premix pancake mix prevents gluten formation making tortilla shaped objects with no bounce to them at all. sad burrito salad time.
