These platforms are bad for all their own reasons but what they do to communities, either preexisting ones or ones that have come into being as a result of these platforms, is to make them shallow and palatable for a mass audience. Communities that were previously in existence that centred around (then) niche topics, before the age of the internet led to their substantive destruction, were more tight-knit, substantively engaged, and were made up of real humans (autistic people). It is also bad because it is a result of the large-scale consolidation of culture. Nothing is separate anymore, everything is on the same platform, everyone likes everything yada yada. It is also present. A good part of comfiness for me is the past and its idealisation. This present phenomenon is part of this present world (how could it not be?), and thus it is viewed with the same level of disgust by me as the present world is, standing in opposition to things i like/admire/enjoy. etc. you are on a board more or less dedicated to this line of though
