I have a feeling 'autism' will become as meaningless as 'hysteria.' The increase in diagnosis, loosening criteria, and constant ironic uses of the word will create a situation where we can't tell genuine autistics from poser autism. The implosion of meaning will lead to 'autism' being just another word, this is how hysteria went from an actual medical condition to just a word for someone who acts nuts. I also feel that transgender has slowly become like this too.
