I think I remember reading that muscle is the first thing to go if your body really isn't getting enough calories and isn't active, since your muscle mass contributes the most to your daily baseline caloric use
Your body is designed to store fat (for the winter in nature). Just make sure you're getting 2 grams protein per kilogram. 400g of 10% fat ground beef is already 100g if you're around 80kg you meed 120g daily.
You should be primarily eating beef, as mentioned don't take those powders they're made from waste products, eat natural foods you'll save money from the total amount of food you're buying.
Beef is kinda expensive atleast in my country, when I start moving out and paying for my own food, I'll go to ethnic markets they outsource halal meat from Denmark
