The idea that modern day mass society and technology is somehow a rebuke of agency doesn't make a lot of sense

I don't think they were saying it as a rebuke, but as a way in which modern society makes the free will superstition less believable;
also what is there to refute you assert that you can choose to escape the botnet, but how do you know?
When a ball is thrown and it continues to fly through the air instead of turning around or staying still we do not attribute this to it's character but to it acting in accordance with physics.
If humans do not possess some mysterious soul thing, which I have seen no compelling evidence for it's a bit hard to see where this agency and ability to "choose" would come from.

I will say. I am not talking about determinism vs free will blah blah. No! I want to say that the Western idea of personhood, what it means to be a person etc. Agency is only made possible by these ideas. They give you the context to make certain choices. Now the Western idea of personhood is probably incorrect. Either way, it is changing and losing relevance in today's times.

No no no.. see you are discussing things still in terms of what is real or not. You reason, according to your own beliefs, that a soul is not real. By real you mean an idea or a concept in the mind that does not correspond with reality. But nowadays, 'reality' is itself an idea that is becoming irrelevant and this has been discussed by many people who are more competent than me. Once you scrub this modernist way of thinking from your mind, suddenly belief in the soul becomes possible in a new way.
