I don't see that at all. The book's title is Confessions of a Mask, not Confessions of the Man Behind the Mask. The MC is, by his own admission, an unreliable narrator. He's obsessed with death and glorifies suicide attackers, but when he has the opportunity to serve in the army he avoids it by feigning tuberculosis. He mentions being attracted to his female cousin and then there's Sonoko, but tells the reader (in first person) that he's not attracted to women like some kid embarrassingly insisting he's not into someone. His relationship with Sonoko reveal this to be a lie. He's unwilling to commit because marrying her doesn't line up with his self-image (mask). The only same-sex stuff that happens in the book is him jacking off. Mishima's point is that Kochan is just a mask, he's not using a mask to hide himself, because he's so insufferably deep into his own larp that there's nothing authentic behind the mask. He's insincere, self-destructive, and childlike.

I'd like to make this thread in order to inform people of one of my favorite obscure musicians, a rapper by the name of Bilal Salaam. This guy is a historiography professor who, in 2021, released seven albums, all part of a series called 'Swordlord.' In these albums, Salaam raps about some politically-charged symbolism relating to Islam over a baroque-style harpsichord sounding thing from some DAW, and every so often there's this TTS voice that says random shit in the middle of tracks. Every album cover is also on a golf course for some reason, it's awesome.

The first non-VN japanese game that I played for immersion was one of the Yugioh DS games. Even though small pixelated kanji can be tough to read, I thought it ended up being a good choice because I was already familiar with the general mechanics and the localized English card names and descriptions. Something comparable for you could be a good way to go. That said, if you're looking to input-max, gaming probably isn't the way.
