It's only two guys moderating the site. They can't be here all the time. I know it's gross, but no one will click on it anyway. Close the site, come back in a bit and it should be gone. I know it sucks but seemingly it can't be avoided on small sites and altchans.

Exactly there needs to be more mods in here so that there is around the clock monitoring of the site
7 Name: Anonymous 2026-04-07 18:59
N0 and Osaka should think about seeking out a third moderator. They're able to check IPs and are in contact with a lot of the regular posters so they know who posts here often and who's sensible.

Work Confessions & Stories

1 Name: EMTRN 2026-04-06 14:31
for those of you that did or do work, what are some confessions or interesting work related stories you have?
for me, we had a guy say that the meat (i work at a fast food place) was 'bad' and insist that we cook him a new batch. the man proceeded to wait the full 30 mins that took, and before leaving told me a nearby girl who came into the store would be "a nice lady for me". dude wasn't rude abt anything tho. just fucking odd.

I used to work with a stocktaking company that was pretty horrible. Extremely petty supervisors that would follow you around like and treat you like a child. Literally every second there was tracked by a gun you carried down and you were constantly prompted to be more efficient.
After working for 5 hours I asked when we were getting a break and was told "we legally only have to give you a break after 6 hours".
When I decided that I no longer wanted to work there I started deliberately counting everything wrong, knowing that (and hoping) they can be penalised as a company for severe miscounts. I'd count as much as 50% less or more of most things.
They didn't realise what I was doing for three weeks, at which point I was fired.

hate using vitrual machines
/why/ that seems so bizare. qemu is fantastic.
risc-v
port is a strong word. It has risc-v compiler, and has been ported to specific IoC but the ARM and Risc-V situation make it borderline impossible to make proper ports. Basically every single board needs to be bootstrapped from scratch. And there are thousands of them each with different configurations. The only reason that this isn't a problem with linux is because for all these boards the devs themselves go through that individual porting work themselves so they can have something other than a paperweight to sell.
169 Name: meat 2026-03-27 14:34
>>168
qemu is fantastic don't get me wrong i just find using VM's for like "more regular use" instead of like testing like code really clunky. and with the risc-v stuff yeah it's def a bunch of work though vf2 has some meh documentation but it was pretty popular for a while so it had decent user porting efforts (plus working with it baremetal myself) the bootstrapping isn't too bad from my experience (though really you'll be writing drivers from scratch in most cases anyway)
170 Name: Anonymous 2026-03-27 15:59
with 9front in qemu, you don't ever have to interact with the vm after you install it and set it up as cpu server. you just drawterm into it, in the real plan9 way. you don't even need to manually start it if you set it up as a service (which is just a shell script with runit so it's as easy to write as the command that started it in the first place  )
i've only set up vms for services in this manner, basically headless installs that run in the background, doing their specific things. each as their own service, so they can be easily started and stopped.

adventuresin9 had some videos about doing a risc-v port and writing drivers. it does seem doable but it's a bit much for a "first time" plan9 install.

Could the jannies really powertrip if their only duty was to delete cp and nothing else?

there is no way to give someone only the ability to delete stuff that everyone agrees should be deleted. if it was easily filterable (cat and mouse filter evading game etc) then we wouldn't need additional jani support.

it is a problem. and there are solutions, perhaps even solutions which may be implemented. not that the solutions which are likely to be choosen will be universally accepted. oh well.

power script cuz I'm on Windows and it's pretty good for scripting on windows.

Instant photography and its consequences

1 Name: Anonymous 2024-04-16 06:32
Instant photography and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.

I must not be the only person on this site with a similar sentiment. The obsession with and accessibility of instant digital photography has fundamentally changed the way in which people interact within the world. People no longer live experiences; they record them. The Western world and parts of Asia I believe have been the most heavily affected by this dreadful phenomenon. Billions of humans that now think it is totally normal to broadcast extremely intimate parts of their lives (mundane things too of course) to the greater population. Not to the mention the privacy ramifications that have arisen as a result. As Richard Stallman said, and I’m paraphrasing slightly here; “Cellphones would have been Stalans dream”. People now willingly upload their crimes onto social media platforms. That is really the level of information desensitisation that we are dealing with here. The worst part is that due to the rising levels of technological integration in our daily lives it Is getting harder and harder to simply opt out (at least for most “normal” people). And, on top of that, even if you DO choose to opt out, you will most likely STILL be integrated into the system via third parties one way or another; (Family/Work photographs, mandatory identification for more and more mundane issues, security cameras, random people filming for social media on the street, non libre software, e.t.c…) . At this point unless you are a proper hiki/recluse (an ideal that is sadly not feasible for most people) you are forced into the system. What was once an optional tool has slowly become, through gradual behavioural decay, an item that most would not even be able to conceive living without. Sort of digital Stockholm syndrome I guess. In terms of mitigation tactics I come up empty handed. I thought we could maybe generate some ideas in this thread regarding what could be done about this. Above all else, if you still possess a smartphone I would highly suggest that you really reflect on how necessary it is to you and consider getting rid of it. If you really need long distance communication, use mail or a “dumbphone”, if you love photography as an artform, use an actual camera and if you enjoy music while out of the house, simply download the songs and put them onto an mp3 player.

This thread is about a general trend, not about each person's individual smartphone usage. Regardless of how mindful you are about smartphone cameras, their proliferation has, indeed, had negative effects on society.
You're no different from those people who say "but I have a gun, and I've never shot anyone!" when people are talking about gun control and mass shootings.

The real problem with photography is all the cameras are taking all the photons. Those photons could help the blind in africa, but no we give them to cameras!
25 Name: Noahie 2026-04-07 01:45
One thing I struggle with in the realm of instant photo and video is grounding myself in reality. So much of visual media is unreal, that I find it difficult these days to really believe what I'm seeing. That's why I prefer a board like this one. It's easier for me to process information when I read it as opposed to looking at it.

These days, I find that it's important to limit myself to exposure of images in general. I had a dumb phone for a year, but got a smartphone so I could more easily text people and do basic administrative stuff. Even these days, I barely spend 30 minutes a day on it, if that.

Computer use is varied, but these days I try to only use my computer to update my website, read, message friends, and listen to music. This honestly takes up most of my day, but I try to keep things as low-key as I can regarding my computer usage.

Why can't i like most anime?

1 Name: Anonymous 2025-07-01 16:48
theres only a few anime that i really enjoyed, nge, lain, cowboy bepop, ghibli, satoshi kon, but when i try to watch other stuff i find it kiddy and annoying.

i was watching cyberpunk edgerunners and i did not care about the characters at all, it was all cool hacker kids being edgy, i watched aot and dropped it because eren is loud and annoying, the fight scenes were alright but you had to watch 20 min of screaming kids to get to them. i guess i like more "adult" themes in anime, stuff like nge deals with serious themes of abandonment and not living up to your potential, lain deals with finding comfort in online spaces when you are a loner, etc, theres only so much super powered anime boy beating up monsters i can watch. i just cant relate with most of the anime fandom. does anyone else feel like this? what animes should i watch instead?

Just watch what you like and don't watch what you don't like uhhh be willing to try new things but I mean don't force yourself to trog though some shit you hate lmao (rest off this is off topic but) I've noticed a lot online, that like "media consumption" has became some sort of status symbol and I felt like it kinda puts the feeling of needing to like certain things regardless of actually enjoying it or not
9 Name: Noahie 2026-04-07 01:37
I feel similarly, but when an anime is good, it's really good. It's a mix of genres: some of my favorites are One Piece (watched since I was a kid) and more recently the film adaptation for Blue Giant. As a medium itself, anime is a good art style. It can seem like there's not stuff out there that's good because otaku culture tends to highlight certain genres more heavily, but from what I've seen, there really is something for everybody.

>>107 Just read your post on Ye and I agree with some of the things you say about the formula he has. It's a good one. It's also interesting to read the more intimate details within the blog, I feel like fame amplifies that which is our flaws, and the strengths can be taken for granted when it comes to consuming media and thinking someone is greater than what is expected. I didn't think to consider that his fans also have this expectation and may be frozen in 2007. I happen to like Yeezus and I think some of his current formula lends from that, now he's bedding in his style. A great musician can't keep up the hype, even though people expect greatness all the time, you need time to let yourself hear the new stuff enough to find it out. Seems he's an album maker, so it makes sense to let it pass the course of time. I doubt he's fully fallen off when it comes to his output, but I think when you're familiar with something or someone, it's a nice comfort to have their new music nod to their old stuff too. Changes do come sometimes to style and output, but ultimately, when we are fans, we can give a pass to the formula eventually when the album stands by itself after the critics voices calm down and they move onto something else. I feel like I'm blabbering now, so I'll stop.

sci fi anime

I've been watching some 80s shows recently, and i realized just how much we're missing out on good sci fi in the modern anime landscape. It's not like I'm super against fantasy, but until fairly recently anime and sf were extremely intertwined concepts. They gotta bring back sf anime, this stuff is good!

science saru has some of the most visually interesting stuff going on in anime at present (personal opinion), and gits with their visual flare could look amazing. i can't imagine them fucking up the story or pacing.
the only problem is that there will be genalpha memes.

The funny thing is that according to MAL tags, the number of non-sequel full-length anime with the sci-fi tag released in the last 6 years is more than double the number that came out in the 80's. So we actually get a lot more sf anime than before. The way I see it, some of the big differences are that nowadays sf anime tend to be much less present in the discourse, they have way shorter episode counts (I mean we just got a single-cour Gundam), and they aren't really considered at the vanguard of any otaku trend. IMO there are also just fewer good ones nowadays, and even fewer great ones. Contemporary sf anime also tend to be much less focused on space as a concept or setting. That said, there have been 3 new sf anime with space settings over the last 4 months, so they are absolutely still present.

There is a distinct sf light novel scene that you can wade into. People like Gegen Kusano (check out his Last and First Idol).
This interview with the Uresekai Picnic author about Yuri is how I first became aware of this subscene.

Hey I didn't want to make a new thread on here so I'm going to post in this one as it seems to be the most relevant to my question.
Is Desert Punk worth watching? Would you recommend it?
I want to get back into watching anime, and I have had the complete collection sitting by my tv for a while.
I don't want to waste my time if there is a better series to watch or if it's going to be utter trash
Oh yeah, no spoilers please

Looks like I dropped Desert Punk on ep.1 when I checked it out years ago and I remember nothing about it, so I would probably say no.
If you really want an anime with a desert/western scifi setting, some other recs would be Casshern Sins, Back Arrow, Trigun (the 90's adaptation), and Sentou Mecha Xabungle.

I have been thinking about this post a lot and an unreasonable amount of things tagged sci-fi now aren't sci-fi in more than the absolute most surface level sense. They are neither futuristic adventures nor do they posit any real possibilities for the future of technology or science beyond maybe being set in the near future with holograms and whatnot. Any futurism is not even window dressing in most modern anime.

I still think about how Gundam remains actually focused on the themes of people having adapted to space and then the way warfare works in a world that forces combat into closer ranges due to technological reasons (which are a bit bullshit and are mostly an excuse to have mobile suits not get instantly fucked by a salvo of BVR missiles, but it still ends up being interesting).

I have been listening to Nihongo con Teppei in the car lately.
He talks in a very natural, casual way (since he is a native Japanese guy) and occasionally goes off on tangents that can be a little hard to follow as a beginner, but he keeps things pretty easy. I can mostly understand most episodes, with some being easier than others.
He also has a more advanced level podcast (at least, he has mentioned it, I can't find it right now).
The earlier episodes are easier than the later ones (that also means they're a lot more boring in my case) and might be more useful to someone starting out. Sometimes he explains terms he uses, sometimes you just need to figure it out or look it up.
I definitely recommend this podcast.

guild wars 2's new expansion is close to ruining my gw2 obsession. the new maps are super pretty and fun to just exist in, but currently they have the best gold farm in the game.
"that's great then right? you have a good convinient reason to exist in those maps, it's a win-win!"
no. see it's like 40x better gold farm than literally any other thing you can do in the game. it's so good that it makes everything else seem like a waste. more, the gold farm involves, going to a magic mirror, shooting a moving target, which reveals several locked chests scattered around the map then looting those chests with key charges.
there is some detail about keeping number of unlock keys you have below 25, so you can't just do all the mirrors first then do all the keys. you get 10 charges on each mirror completion, and the 3 different chest sizes take 2, 4, and 10 keys respectively.
there aren't enough keys for all the chests if you just do the mirrors once, so in order to effectively do it you have to keep track of which mirrors you need to redo or every time a mirror reveals more charges debt in chests than you can cover with just that mirror open what you can then go back to that mirror, reload the map, then finish opening. that last way is pretty ineffecient in terms of charges tho because some mirrors reveal less charge debt in chests than they reveal, so you could be wasting key charges that way.

n0 and dotes are wrong about pop punk and denpa

ok so everyone knows pop punk is just punk for kids...radio disney punk....denpa does not exist in this form yet. Nobody is showing shitty kickflips to their children. Rhyme and people who make similar content to her are essentially "post-denpa" which is entirely different from neodenpa

Semi-old thread, but WTF is OP talking about? Pop punk has millions of listeners every day that are not children. They're surplus value, demoralized, delayed-maturity teenagers and young adults. Obviously, when we get to a site such as denpa-chan, & niche parts of YouTube, where the average user has co-morbid mental illness & social anxiety, there's going to be a lot of people who haven't grown up enough to be comfortable in their own skin yet. This is primarily who pop punk gives a voice to. It's a banner you hang up, for the purposes of showing off, to other people, that you DO belong. It's a line you draw in the sand.

Personally, I've never liked shitty kickflips. Or anyone else, for that matter, who takes denpa-NEET culture, runs it through an Instagram-twomad editing filter, and uploads the final product exclusively to Silicon Valley(Google, Facebook, TikTok)'s data-mining money machine, just to make it go down easier for normals.

marvel movies are made for kids but its mostly adults watching them...doesn't really matter at the end of the day. it kind of just is what it is...also SK definitely has pop punk vibes but i'd put her more in the post-punk or goth category because she took denpa neet shit and made it prettier with way more effort..which is basically post-punk...neodenpa is hardcore because if you watch mint the denpa he's way more stripped down, raw, and hostile with his stuff..kinda like how hardcore is made...anyways half of the people i had in mind when making this post deleted their channel or moved to archive so its kind of irrelevant now

necropost and actually just thread derailment but to be-fair the original thread is booty cheeks and i don't wanna make more threads.
i hate these meta-"denpa" discussions but i haven't seen much of any sort of punk or really that much of a diy mentality in these spaces or really much at all and it's quite saddening... i don't really get the "punk" and "denpa" comparison in the original posts but whatever

referring to "pop punk" i know the original post means pop punk as in commercial "punk" but i feel "pop punk" as a sound descriptor is pretty good and like my fav diy local band heck my fav band in the local scene as a whole i would is could be described as "pop punk" (also another band pop punk album i love is "Disco Eraser by Final Solutions" but its also noise rock) I'd say i like "pop punk" more than "crust punk" but again genres and descriptors aren't all that important.

The video was released on February 5th, 2019, and garnered 204 views by December 23rd, 2024. The name I have already mentioned. I know not of the content, but the description read "#killallthebabiesandtheover80s".

ya, that wasn't posted when i was making my message, sorry.
I've checked my current archive and the online ones, apparently i don't have it or it is mislabeled.

i do seem to recall having watched it, so i have no idea why i don't have it in my archive.

YouTube gave that video a community guidelines strike for supposedly promoting violence. They've done the same thing to multiple osaka video just for having an eccentric title
